Andre's Journeys: Liberia

My intention for this blog is to share with my readers my journey to Liberia. I will work with the staff of the Center for Victims (CVT) Healing Centers in Bjarna and Voinjama Liberia. The purpose is twofold to continue the Story Project that I developed for CVT-Minneapolis and to learn about the various healing appoaches used by CVT at their Healing Center's in Liberia.

This trip was made possible by a Human Rights Fellowship from the Uninversity of Minnesota Human Rights Center and a grant from St. Thomas the Apostle Community in Minneapolis.

Andre is a storyteller, educator, psychotherapist and consultant who writes, tells and evokes stories. Andre has taught storytelling to medical, mental health and social service professionals within hospitals, social service agencies, and corrections, and to writers, visual artist and performers. Andre uses story to help individuals and communties to learn, to grow and to heal.

A  Story

The evening was warm with expectation and possibilities. A summer evening filled with games of tag, orange Popsicles, and the expectation that the soon darken night sky would be filled with a thousand flashes of light from the fireflies. Carrying their bottles of beer the adults began to gather in Hokies’ kitchen. My instincts were set afire. I knew that where adults gathered; I wanted to be. I snuck through the outside basement door, quietly climbed the cellar steps, slowly opened the door and entered the kitchen. I quickly went to my mother's side and sat next to her. I nervously waited anticipating her command to leave. No command came. I sat silently listening to the stories told by my parents and my neighbors of WWII, the depression, and their childhood. I clearly remember this hot summer evening. This was the moment that I came to love story.
